India Squad For T20 World Cup 2024: Possible Selection Criteria

India has announced its 15-player squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, with Rohit Sharma leading the team’s charge to victory. The selection procedure drew a lot of interest, especially because the wicketkeeper position was so important.

After careful consideration, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to give Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson a place in the India Squad for T20 Wolrd Cup especially considering their wicket keeping abilities and current good form with the bat also.

Shivam Dube’s strong IPL performance won him a spot in the India of squad of World Cup, following his appearance in the last T20I series against Afghanistan. India’s spinners include Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, while Jasprit Bumrah leads the pace battery, which includes Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and vice-captain Hardik Pandya.

The batting order includes obvious options such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav, as well as skipper Rohit Sharma. Reserves include Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan. 

Recent Form of each Player and why they’re selected in the World Cup Team

Rohit Sharma(c) – Rohit Sharma’s choice as captain of the Indian team for the forthcoming T20 World Cup comes as no surprise, given his outstanding performance in the recently concluded ODI World Cup.

Rohit is India’s most experienced player in the T20 World Cup, having played in all previous editions. With 963 runs scored in 36 innings throughout World Cup campaigns, at an amazing average of 34.4, his batting ability on the big stage makes him a formidable force. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal – Yashasvi Jaiswal’s outstanding performances for India over the past year have earned him a position in the Indian 2024 T20 World Cup Squad. This will be his first appearance in a World Cup tournament.

In the recent year, Jaiswal has demonstrated his batting brilliance in 16 matches for India, scoring a staggering 502 runs. His impressive 161.9 strike rate demonstrates his ability to score fast and decisively.

Virat Kohli – Virat Kohli’s job as India’s No. 3 batsman is critical, as he is tasked with anchoring the top order and providing stability during the T20 World Cup.

Kohli’s credentials speak for itself, with a stellar World Cup record that includes Player of the Tournament awards in 2014 and 2016. In 25 World Cup innings, he has scored 1141 runs at an average of 81.5. He is known for his consistency and ability to perform under pressure.

Suryakumar Yadav – Suryakumar Yadav’s expertise in the T20 format defines him as a specialist player, critical to India’s performance in the coming T20 World Cup. India’s fortunes will be greatly reliant on his ability to bat aggressively while remaining composed.

Surya has already made an impact in just 9 innings, scoring 281 runs at a remarkable 56.2 batting average. His ability to quicken the run rate is seen in his enormous strike rate of 181.3.

Rishabh Pant – Rishabh Pant’s return to the Indian squad after more than a year. Pant, tasked with finishing duties, adds a combination of power hitting and measured aggression to the batting lineup.

Despite not scoring very well in World Cup matches (87 runs from 5 games), Pant’s ability to turn the course of a game with his explosive batting style cannot be overlooked.

Hardik Pandya – Hardik Pandya’s role as India’s No. 6 batsman and third seamer carries significant responsibility in the upcoming T20 World Cup. With his explosive batting power and ability to strike crucial blows with the ball, Pandya adds versatility to the team.

In 10 innings of World Cup matches, he has contributed 213 runs and taken 13 wickets, showcasing his value as a genuine all-rounder. 

Ravindra Jadeja – Ravindra Jadeja’s role as a spinning all-rounder offers depth and balance to the Indian team, which is enhanced by his superb fielding abilities.

While he may not have had many opportunities with the bat in the World Cup, scoring 95 runs in 9 innings, Jadeja’s primary impact is with the ball. With 21 wickets, he has established himself as a viable bowling option in T20I cricket.

Kuldeep Yadav – Kuldeep Yadav has a vital role in the Indian team, taking wickets and controlling the run pace during the middle overs in T20 matches. While Yadav has yet to make his World Cup debut, his previous performances demonstrate his talent.

He has taken 15 wickets in his last ten T20I outings over the past year, demonstrating his effectiveness. Interestingly, Kuldeep Yadav has maintained a remarkable economy rate at 6.35.

Yuzvendra Chahal – Yuzvendra Chahal’s return to the Indian side is crucial following his absence from the ODI World Cup last year. Since 2023, he has played 9 T20I matches and taken 9 wickets. Chahal’s return brings depth and experience to India’s spin bowling squad. 

Arshdeep Singh – Arshdeep Singh’s arrival in the Indian team brings diversity to the bowling attack, as his left-arm angle provides a new perspective.

Arshdeep is well-known for his ability to deliver yorkers in the death overs, making him an important part of the team’s bowling plan. In his six World Cup games, he has proved his effectiveness by taking 10 wickets at an outstanding strike rate of 12.

Jasprit Bumrah – Jasprit Bumrah will lead India’s pace attack at the T20 World Cup, depending on his significant experience with the format.

Bumrah’s performance is critical to India’s success, as he can execute many bowling variations with perfection. In ten World Cup matches, he has taken 11 wickets and maintained an excellent economy rate of 6.41. 

Sanju Samson – Sanju Samson takes over as India’s backup wicketkeeper-batsman, providing a dependable option considering his recent form.

Over the last year, Samson has proven his batting talent, making him an important member of the squad. In his 22 T20I innings, he has scored 374 runs at a good strike rate of 133.1.

Shivam Dube – Shivam Dube’s outstanding form makes him an invaluable asset to the Indian Squad in the upcoming T20 World Cup. His ability to strike sixes and create momentum in the middle overs strengthens the batting lineup.

Dube’s utility also extends to bowling, where he can offer a couple of overs. He demonstrated his skill in the last series against Afghanistan, scoring 124 runs at a scorching strike rate of 161. Furthermore, he made significant contributions with the ball, taking two wickets during the series. 

Axar Patel – Axar Patel emerges as a versatile asset for the Indian team, contributing in every aspect of the game. Over the last year, Patel showed his versatility by scoring 190 runs and taking 15 wickets in 14 innings.

His ability to excel with both bat and ball strengthens India’s lineup, providing significant options in critical moments during the T20 World Cup.

Mohammed Siraj – Mohammed Siraj contributes to India’s pace assault with his ability to produce speed and bounce.

With 12 wickets in ten T20I matches for India, he proves his effectiveness as a wicket-taker. Siraj’s impressive strike rate of 19 proves his ability to make important breakthroughs.
