The Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to get bigger and better from 2022, with the addition of two new franchises Ahmedabad and Lucknow, starting from the next season onwards.
On October 25, the two teams were announced as newcomers to the cash-rich league. While Kolkata-based business tycoon Sanjeev Goenka’s RPSG group won the Lucknow franchise for Rs 7,090 crore and CVC Capital, an international equity investment firm, won the Ahmedabad franchise for Rs 5,600 crore.

The inclusion of two teams coincides with the IPL mega Auction that is set to take place soon, ahead of the IPL 2022. The deadline for player retention for the first eight teams, though, is approaching fast, with franchises being requested to submit names by November 30.
According to the report, once the other eight clubs have confirmed their retentions, Lucknow and Ahmedabad will be given the option of selecting three players from the auction pool and the two new teams have a timeline from 1st December to 25th December to pick their players.

IPL Retention Rules:
- Every team has been given a sum of Rs 90 crore to bring to the auction. There is, however, one minor snag, every retention would have a cost, and the cost would change dramatically as the number of retentions increased.
- A side will be able to keep up to three Indian players (capped or uncapped) and two foreign players, with a maximum of four retentions.
- A team cannot keep more than two uncapped players, according to the rules.
The team management has the option of keeping three Indian players and one overseas player, or two Indian players and two overseas players, depending on the circumstances.
- Before the start of the auction, two new IPL franchises can choose any two Indian and one foreign player from the Mega auction pool.
- Before the auction, new teams can only select one uncapped player.
- For the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, there will be no Right to Match (RTM) cards.
IPL Player Retention Salary Cap:
To bring to the auction, each team has been granted an amount of Rs 90 crore, each retention would have a fee, which would fluctuate considerably as the number of retentions increased.
